Our Commitment to Safety and its Rewards

Smithfield Peat is serious about our responsibility for safety, and committed to develop a workplace culture of safety. The keys to safety are communication, commitment, and teamwork, and our goal is accident-free work with the traditional Smithfield Peat quality. Our workplace and operations are under the jurisdiction of U. S. Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) and the U S. Mine Safety & Health Administration (MSHA).  Smithfield Peat employees have attained 10-hour OSHA certification, and receive MSHA 24-hour new miner and 8-hour annual refresher training.

We are proud to have earned nine Sentinels of Safety Awards by the US Department of Labor, Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) for employee hours worked without a lost workday injury for years 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2013.  The Sentinels of Safety Award is the oldest continuous safety award in the country.

We value each and every employee for their continued commitment in striving for a safer and healthier work environment, which is achievable only through teamwork.
